Gillian McKeith Newsletter : Modern Living

Just to let you know that I have recently returned from the USA where I took a 2-week holiday.   It gave me a real break from writing one book and starting another one. My newest book is expected to be out for the new year in January 07 and it’s called ‘Dr Gillian McKeith’s Shopping Guide’.  It is the simplest and easiest book to use, since it summarises everything I want you to know in a very accessible and affordable format. And it fits so very nicely into a handbag or a glove-compartment of the car. 

Now I have started to work, research and write on another book for the Spring 2007.  This other one is huge, in fact the biggest book I have ever written. I will keep you posted as we get closer to the Big Day.    In the meantime, first my smaller Shopping Guide book comes out in January and then the humongous book comes out in about April. A year of great information to come!

Anyway, back to my American trip.  It was good to go, but it is even better to return to the UK!    My return flight flew out only a couple days after the disclosure of that scary plot when all carry-on luggage was subsequently barred from the aircraft.   So my kids and I could not bring on my usual array of foods, bottles of water, colouring books, toys and not even my contact lense solution.  Talk about stress! 

In the end, we were all fine, and British Airways even had extra bottles of H2O.

For more than 20 years, I have been a frequent traveller to the US.  The one thing I noticed this time while in America is that the people seem to be getting larger, specifically wider. They are gaining weight far too fast and too much.  This is a problem not only in the USA, but clearly a worldwide epidemic; although the Americans seem to be suffering the most, quite frankly.  Yet we are all at risk.   The advent of computers, internet age, automobiles, and general sedentary lifestyle is creating a very dangerous cocktail for the human body. This new lifestyle we call ‘modern living’ is an experiment which has dramatically intensified in the past 10 years, since the Internet has become the new way of life for many. 

But let’s learn from my observations of the Americans.   We can prevent or reverse this problem.  First and foremost is the food.  We must obviously make more healthy choices.  Second, exercise needs to become a regular occurrence throughout the day. You see exercise needs to be a primary action of living.  We no longer can afford to try and work in the exercise to our day.  Quite the opposite:  We need to work in everything else around the exercise.   That needs to be the goal:  Exercise must come first and everything else needs to work around it.  This may sound too bold a goal. But it is the only way forward. 

Set this as your goal, and you could see your life change. 

For example, instead of trying to park your car so close to the shop, I would rather you park as far away as possible and make the long walk.  At work lunchtime and tea breaks, go out each time and take long walks or jog. Ask the boss for some extra break time to exercise and then eat.  Eating slowly and chewing your food is also essential for good health.  I have noticed that the Americans seem to be the fastest eaters on Earth. But with that said, I am equally concerned by the way that my daughters’ schools force the kids to eat so quickly so that they can get back to their lessons. This is not smart. Schools and workplaces, and everyone else in between need to know that proper longer breaks are needed for extra quiet time to eat slowly.  This must not be compromised.   

Finally, give up the TV set, except of course on Wednesdays 8:30pm on Channel 4 when my You Are What You Eat programme kicks off again next week.  Instead of television (except Wednesday nights!), turn up the music and start dancing, or go out and ride a bicycle,  get a trampoline and jump, or buy a hoola-hoop, but keep moving as much as you can throughout the evening.  Again, this is essential if you want to feel well.  Remember to consult with your GP or medical doctor first before embarking upon any fitness programme.
